Passion Fruit Tree General Description And Properties


The passion fruit is a perennial woody tree, climbing habit and rapid development , which can reach up to 10 m long, the leaves are simple, alternate,stipules and an earring in the armpit, with serrated margins , the flowers are solitary and axillary , showy and fragrant , the fruit is a spherical , ellipsoid or globose berry , which can measure up to 10 cm in diameter and weighs 190 g, yellow or purplish , with a highly aromatic pulp.

The fruit contains, like all of its kind, nearly 250 small seeds, dark brown and pleasant taste.

The seeds are suspended in a gelatinous liquid yellow - orange constitutes 7 to 12 % of fruit weight, 20 % lipids ( fatty acid linoleic , linolenic , myristic , oleic andpalmitic ) , which would be used as a source of edible fats or industrial use in the manufacture of varnishes and paints.

It is used in food in two main ways : direct consumption of juice and fruit juice whose concentration can reach 41 % , has color yellow gold, flavor and aromas characteristic and net acidity.


Color is developed by the presence of carotenoids and aroma due of a mixture of  18 volatile oil being higher proportion hexical valproate , hexyl butyrate , ethyl butyrate and etilcaproato.


In tropical and subtropical regions humans eat its flesh and seeds. The main use is given to this fruit omprises the producing nectar juice , liquor or syrup . Passion fruit extract are used in the preparation of fruit drinks. It is also used for the development process of foods and sweets .


Components passion fruit
The passion fruit is quite rich in minerals such as calcium , iron and phosphorus. Contains vitamins A, B and C mainly and quite content niacin , which is very suitable for the cholesterol treatment and the perfect condition of the nerves.

In its composition has been discovered serotonin, a potent neurotransmitter needed for healthy nervous system and whose deficiencies are responsible for conditions such as depression , certain types of obesity, obsessive behaviors, insomnia, migraines. It is the plant that contains the highest amount of niacin.
