Camphor oil origin
This tree is native from Far East, mainly from Viet Nam, China and Japan. Currently growing in some regions of the United States, where it has become an invasive specie. In Florida , for example, there are control programs for this tree.
Used plant parts: Oil extracted from the tree, but also the leaves,stems and roots are used in traditional medicine.
Currently, the camphor production has been largely replaced by industrial chemical synthesis based in compounds contained in turpentine.
Usage modes
The essential oil is diluted in almond oil and applied externally as a massage to improve skin capillary circulation and increase the blood pressure. Oil vapors that emanating are added to hot water and aspirated to relieve respiratory problems.
Applications-Camphor oil uses
Preparations or products made from camphor oil have been sed both internally and externally to treat various conditions including respiratory and rheumatic problems. The main use of camphor is to combat cough.
This plant contains substances which, on contact with water, they form a protective layer that covering upper respiratory tract mucosa, thereby reducing mechanical irritation and preventing cough.
Camphor tea sometimes is taken to help remove secretions from the upper respiratory tract, but ingestion is not recommended because the medicinal dose is close to the toxic dose.
Precautions to be taken into account
• Avoid internal use of products containing camphor, because its potential toxicity.
• Ingestion of products containing alcanfore can cause seizures in susceptible people. Avoid internal use in patients with Parkinson's disease or epilepsy .
• Do not use any product containing camphor during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
* As with any essential oil, camphor oil never apply in the face or in the nostrils of young children or patients with asthma , as this can cause bronchospasm, convulsions and asphyxia.
• The camphor oil application for a prolonged period it is easier to store in body fat and may cause poisoning in long-term.
• For respiratory tract infections treatment, it is best to use other options that are less risky than camphor.
• Avoid applying camphor oil on open wounds or people with sensitive skin, as this can cause severe irritation .
