tablet to the diabetes, or insulin, you will either need to eat a snack between meals
and before bedtime. Your doctor, diabetes educator or dietician can tell you if you need to eat a snack.

■ Base your meals on foods rich in carbohydrates with fiber, such as whole-grain breads and cereals, beans, lentils, vegetables with starches, e.g. , potatoes and fruit. Foods containing that carbohydrates are good for you. These foods put
something in their blood glucose (sugar), which your body uses for energy. A dietician can tell you how much carbohydrate you can eat at each meal.

■ The protein-rich foods are important for good health. Choose protein foods
that are low in fat, such as lean meat, skinless chicken, fish and dairy foods
low in fat.

■ Choose foods low in fat, especially saturated fat.  Saturated fat is bad for
the heart. Limit foods high in saturated fat, such as whole milk, fatty meat
,butter, cheese, coconut milk, processed foods and food to take home. Include
small amounts of healthy fats, such as margarines polyunsaturated or
monounsaturated oils such as sunflower, soybean, olive and canola, fish, nuts, seeds, and avocado.

■ Limit foods rich in sugar and/or grease such as soft drinks, candy, chocolate, cakes,biscuits and masses.

■ If you drink alcohol, talk to your doctor if it is safe for you and how much you can take.

■ Staying physically active can help you control your diabetes. Ask your doctor
what type of activity and how much is good for you.
