Coriander Benefits And Uses
Coriander is an herb of the family Umbelliferae ( Coriandrum sativum ), from the Middle East, where it grows wild throughout the year.
Archaeological finds in Egyptian tombs reveal that this people used to leave bouquets of this herb as a funerary offering.
The Greek physician Hippocrates used it as a drug. Among the Romans,cilantro also enjoyed of popularity. As relate the ancient writings; placed under the pillow, it was useful to reduce fever and alleviate headaches.
In the first century AD , was used as the basis of a Roman condiment called coriandratum, which masked the flavor of the meat decomposed. In ancient times it was assured that if men consumed in high doses improved their sexual potency.
Properties
* It is stimulant, digestive, analgesic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac , and bactericidal . The flavor and aroma of the herb are very characteristic and intense, so should be used in cooking with moderation.
* For its sensitivity to heat, and to do not miss its scent, it is recommended to use fresh coriander and add it when little time is left for cooking.
* Combined with other spices is very good: with parsley, mint and basil, can be used to flavor pickles and sausages.
* Because of its fragile consistency, it is preferable to keep in the refrigerator with roots in a glass of water and leaves covered with a plastic bag. in this way, leaves and aroma - essence may remain in good condition longer.
Purifying herb
* Coriander is considered a natural debugger: scientific studies have proven its effectiveness in eliminating toxic metals from the body, especially in cases of mercury poisoning . Other research indicates that thanks to its essential oils , coriander helps to eradicate salmonella, a bacteria present in some contaminated food that can cause stomach infection.
* The substance called citronellol contained in its essential oils, makes the coriander an ally to fight bad breath and prevent sores and oral ulcers. Eating this coriander helps to remove urinary infections and for the smooth functioning of the liver.
